CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES

CONCERT BAND

The FHSCB is the premier performing group in the school system. It is made up of students in grades 9-12 and they perform four to five concerts each year. Our repertoire consists of traditional band favorites, contemporary compositions, and marches which cover over 120 years of our wind band heritage. The group has performed at OMEA State Competition twice - in 1998 and 1999. They consistently receive superior and excellent ratings at district contest.

DRAMA CLUB

Drama Club is designed to give students experience in all aspects of a theatre production. The group puts on a musical production in the spring. Auditions are conducted in the winter. Students in this club are encouraged to be creative and expand on their gifts. Whatever your talent or interest – from singing and acting on stage to crew hands helping with the set design or working the stage lights – Drama Club has a spot for you!

FCCLA

Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is a dynamic student organization that helps youth become strong leaders and address important personal, family, work and social issues through Family and Consumer Sciences Education. Involvement in FCCLA offers members the opportunity to expand their leadership potential and develop 21st Century Skills for life such as: planning, goal setting, problem solving, decision making, working as a team, and also the importance of communication. Members are involved in community service projects and individual growth projects. They have the opportunity to compete against students from across the country in a variety of STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) events.

FFA

While the acronym "FFA" is generally thought to stand for "Future Farmers of America", this is no longer the case. The FFA is simply the FFA. It has become an organization for everyone. When our day and age began to call for leaders over farmers the FFA put its best foot forward to answer the call. This national organization now prides itself in the successful development of the nation's future leaders while also keeping focused on the promotion of agriculture.

Because the FFA is so large and nationally renowned, members of the FFA at Fairbanks have countless opportunities to participate in fun and rewarding activities and competitions. The Fairbanks FFA offers any and all types of judging (from horses to cuts of beef), and numerous speech and essay competitions (Voice of Democracy, Creed Contest, Prepared Speech, Extemporaneous Speech). The Fairbanks FFA also gives students that enjoy woodworking a chance to be rewarded for their efforts with the coveted "Top Shop" award and a chance to win awards on the state level. Competing on one of Fairbanks's Parliamentary Procedure Teams, which is judged on how effectively a team can run an orderly and successful meeting, also proves to be a great time and rewarding experience. These activities are just the tip of the vast iceberg of opportunities and rewards that the FFA has to offer.

MARCHING BAND

The Fairbanks Marching Band is the most active and widely recognized performing group in the school system. Members are in grades 8-12 and begin rehearsals in July, perform in the Union County Fair parade, and then go to band camp at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware. They perform at all Fairbanks football games, as well as the Sidney Sensational Sounds festival and several OMEA contests. They take pride in their musical and marching performance and represent their school well.

MOCK TRIAL

The Ohio Mock Trial Program is an academic competition designed to foster a better understanding of the American democratic legal system and to encourage development of analytical and communication skills. The Fairbanks Mock Trial Program has grown substantially in the last few years and continues to set high goals for the future. The Mock Trial Team meets from October through March and participates in several competitions.

NHS

The Fairbanks High School chapter of the National Honor Society is a group committed to community service, citizenship, and the pursuit of scholarship. NHS consists of roughly the top fifteen percent in the junior and senior classes with the admittance of a new class of sophomores, juniors, and seniors each January. Potential candidates are evaluated by a committee of faculty members based on their G.P.A, school/community involvement, citizenship, their answer to an essay question, and comments on two teacher evaluations for the student. Once the candidates are accepted they participate in community service projects including: frequent nursing home visits, peer tutoring in the elementary, middle, and high schools, hosting Blood Drives for the Red Cross, haunting the Maize for the elementary and middle school students, Adopt a Family for Christmas and Thanksgiving, selling tickets at home sporting events for the fall and winter seasons, and Adopt a Highway. The members also make monthly donations to the Milford Center Food Pantry. In order to stay in the chapter members must continue to excel in all four areas emphasized by the National NHS organization, cooperation, service, scholarship, and citizenship.

PEP BAND

In the FMB off season, the Pep Band is the cool place to be. From "Hey!" to "Louie, Louie,"we pride ourselves on being the "sixth man" in all our home basketball games. Students in grades 7-12 are eligible to participate and show their pride and enthusiasm by playing for our Fairbanks panthers and cheering them onto victory.

SCIENCE CLUB

Science Club is for students who are interested in science activities that go beyond what is done in the classroom. The club takes a hiking trip to Hocking Hills in the spring and tries to get in an additional trip elsewhere. In recent years they have gone to Highbanks Metro Park, The Wilds, and Cedar Bog Nature Preserve. Other activities include dissections and presentations by people in science-related fields!

SKI CLUB

The Fairbanks Middle School and High School ski clubs travel to Mad River Mountain on Wednesdays throughout the ski season. The ski club offers students the opportunity to participate in the winter activities of snow skiing or snow boarding. Through group pricing, a season membership at Mad River Mountain can be purchased at a very affordable price. A ski trip may be planned if there is interest thus allowing the club members to experience different terrain. The club offers a unique out-of-school experience that leads to a life long physical activity.

STUDENT COUNCIL

The Student Council of Fairbanks High School sponsors a wide variety of services and activities throughout the year to promote leadership, community, and service. The council consists of the five elected representatives from each class for a total of twenty members. Representatives for the senior, junior, and sophomore classes are chosen in the spring, while representatives for the freshman class are chosen in the fall.
