The Fairbanks Local School District Board of Education is pleased to announce that Mrs. Janel Chapman has been offered the position of Superintendent of Fairbanks Local Schools.
At the March 31, 2025 special meeting of the Fairbanks Board of Education, the board exited executive session and passed a resolution “that the Board of Education of the Fairbanks Local School District hereby approves the following Board Action to Offer an Employment Agreement to Ms. Janel Chapman as its New Superintendent beginning with the 2025-2026 School Year.”
We are thrilled to welcome Mrs. Chapman into this leadership role. Over the past four years, she has been instrumental in the continued growth and success of Fairbanks Local Schools. Her strong relationships, effective communication, and unwavering commitment to our district will help drive our progress in the years ahead.
Following Mr. Schirg’s resignation, the Board conducted a thorough selection process to identify the next superintendent. Mrs. Chapman participated in an initial interview with the Board on March 10. On March 17, she engaged in a Q&A session with certified, classified, and administrative staff before returning for a second interview with the Board.
Mrs. Chapman brings extensive experience in education, having served as a teacher, school counselor, and high school principal. She has held principal positions at both North Union and Fairbanks High Schools and currently serves as Fairbanks’ Chief Academic Officer, leading key initiatives in academics and professional development. She holds two master’s degrees and a superintendent’s license. Mrs. Chapman and her husband, Ryan, are proud parents of three children.
Reflecting on her new role, Mrs. Chapman shared:
"I am extremely honored, privileged, and excited to serve as the next superintendent of Fairbanks Local Schools. Our school community has a rich history, deep pride, and high expectations for our schools. I look forward to working alongside our dedicated staff, engaged families, supportive community, and dynamic students."
At the regular Board of Education meeting on Monday, April 21, at 7:00 PM, the Board will vote on the approval of Mrs. Chapman’s contract. Prior to the meeting, we invite staff, students, families, and community members to a welcome reception at 6:30 PM to celebrate and congratulate her. We hope to see you there!
The Board of Education looks forward to this next chapter for Fairbanks Local Schools and the opportunities ahead for our school community.
